The merlin may be a small bird but it is extraordinary when startlingly small birds in its strong, dashing flight. It generally keeps low in flight but has been known to hover occasionally. The merlin can usually be seen sitting on a low perch in its upright posture where there is a view of the moorland when it is not hunting.
